What I want to eat in 2017

The year 2016 will soon be on the back burner. I had some great and memorable meals this year, throughout North Carolina, and in everywhere in between from Charleston to San Francisco. I look forward to many more good meals shared with family and friends in the upcoming year, as well some very, very good Michelin-star sushi and ramen in Tokyo in the springtime.

Here are some of my personal epicurean goals for the upcoming year, including nearby restaurants that I want to try in 2017:

I’ve mastered a few things in the kitchen this year; I finally have my homemade bagels (the secret is malted barley), Parker House rolls and croissants recipes down. I now have a great go-to homemade mascarpone-whipped cream frosting for my birthday cakes. To the delight of my husband, I now make a pretty good soft pretzel and poblano cheese dip at home. And, I can declare that I have perfected a made-from-scratch basic egg pasta that works great for ravioli as well.

But few things have remained elusive in 2016. I’ve tried several recipes for homemade gnocchi, but I still can’t get it to restaurant quality. I have yet to try my hand at macarons and have yet to make a decent homemade pie. So, in other words, plenty of time for yet more culinary achievements.

My first goal of 2017 though? To recreate the sumptuous duck confit adobo dish from The Admiral in West Asheville for a New Year’s Eve dinner. Wish me luck, and Happy New Year!
