My sweet tooth has been tamed as the years have gone past, but occasionally I still hanker for that sweet treat after dinner.
One of those nights struck when my husband and I were in Durham. Not satisfied with the dessert options at the restaurant where we dined, we thought of the dessert counter at Guglhupf. The café, bakery and pâtisserie practically does it all.
What we didn’t that know that night though—it was nearly 9 p.m. when we arrived—that Guglphupf transforms into a full-service restaurant at night. We were immediately notified of this change as we tried to shuffle past the host at the door, insisting that we were there “just for dessert”.
“Just for dessert” or not, Guglhupf was happy to accommodate. Our eyes skimmed the dessert menu full of tarts, eclairs and cakes and settled on a chocolate tart with a side of stracciatella gelato. We reveled in the richness of the chocolate tart that night and tempered the sinfulness with the occasional bite of gelato. We kicked back later with our cups of espresso, happy to savor the night. It was a divine time as we snuck teensy bites by candlelight on Guglhupf’s outdoor patio under strings of lights that hung above.
If there was a pair having a better time that night, we didn’t know and didn’t care—we had chocolate, good espresso and each other.
